Αυτές είναι όλες αντεστραμμένες προτάσεις. Οι αντεστραμμενες προτάσεις είναι προτάσεις με μη κανονική τοποθέτηση του ρήματος, το οποίο μπαίνει πριν το υποκείμενο.

Χρήση της ερωτηματικής μορφής (Question Form)

Σε αυτή την περίπτωση, η ερωτηματική μορφή (βοηθητικό ρήμα + υποκείμενο + κύριο ρήμα) χρησιμοποιείται στη θέση της κανονικής καταφατικής προτασιακής δομής (π.χ. He goes to work every day)

Σε αυτή την περίπτωση, η ερωτηματική μορφή αντικαθιστά την κανονική προτασιακή δομή σε μία δήλωση. Γενικά, μία αντιστροφή χρησιμοποιείται για να τονίσει την μοναδικότητα ενός γεγονότος και αρχίζει με μία άρνηση. 

Χρονικές εκφράσεις: never, rarely, seldom

Χρονικές εκφράσεις: hardly, barely, no sooner, ή scarcely

These time expressions are used when a there are a succession of events in the past.

Scarcely had I got out of bed when the doorbell rang.
No sooner had he finished dinner, when she walked in the door.

Μετά από εκφράσεις με το 'Only' όπως: 'only after', 'only when', 'only then', κ.λ.π.

Το 'only' χρησιμοποιείται με μία χρονική έκφραση.

Το 'little' χρησιμοποιείται με αρνητική έννοια.

Αντιστροφή μετά τα: 'So', 'Such', και 'That'

'So'
'So + επίθετο ... that' συνδυασμένα με το ρήμα 'to be'.

So strange was the situation that I couldn't sleep.
So difficult is the test that students need three months to prepare.

'Such'
'So + to be + ουσιαστικό ... (that)':

Αντεστραμμένοι υποθετικοί λόγοι

Μερικές φορές οι υποθετικοί λόγοι αντιστρέφονται για να εκφραστούν πιο επίσημοι. Σε αυτή την περίπτωση ο υποθετικός σύνδεσμος 'if' παραλείπεται και οι αντεστραμμένες μορφές παίρνουν το ρόλο της υποθετικής πρότασης.
